Quick reference: eBay image requirements
The rules below apply to standard listing photos. The first photo becomes your gallery image — the one buyers see in search results — so make it your cleanest, sharpest shot.
| Requirement | Rule | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum size | 500 px longest side | Hard requirement — smaller uploads are rejected |
| Recommended size | 1,600 × 1,600 px | Sharp on retina screens, full zoom support |
| Zoom | From ~800 px, best at 1,600 px+ | Buyers zoom to check condition — big returns reducer |
| Photos per listing | Up to 24, free | Listings with 8+ photos measurably outsell 1–2 photo listings |
| File size | Up to 12 MB | JPEG at 90%+ quality is the sweet spot |
| Formats | JPEG, PNG (also BMP, TIFF, GIF) | Use JPEG for photos, PNG for graphics |
| Watermarks / text / borders | Not allowed | Banned since 2018 — photo shows the item only |
| Background | White or plain neutral recommended | Required in some catalog categories (e.g. sneakers) |
The size that actually matters: 1,600 px
eBay lets a 500 px photo through, but on a modern phone screen it looks soft, and zoom either won't trigger or shows a blurry mess. Zoom activates from roughly 800 px on the longest side and only looks convincing from about 1,600 px — which is why 1,600 × 1,600 is the size worth standardizing on. Used-item buyers zoom constantly: they're looking for scratches, stitching, labels and wear. A photo that survives that inspection sells the item and prevents the "item not as described" return. Our resize an image for eBay tool scales any photo to 1,600 × 1,600 px in one step, padding to a square with a white background so nothing gets cropped.
Square photos win the gallery
eBay search results display near-square thumbnails. A tall or wide photo gets letterboxed or cropped, which makes your listing look smaller than the competition in the grid. Shoot or pad to a 1:1 square with the product filling most of the frame — the same rule that works on Amazon. If your source photo is a different shape, crop it to square or let the eBay resizer pad it with white instead of cropping.
No watermarks, no borders, no text — really
Sellers used to stamp their username across photos to stop image theft; eBay banned all of it in 2018. Watermarks, decorative borders, promotional text ("FREE SHIPPING!") and collages on the main photo can get a listing suppressed or removed. The photo shows the item, the description does the talking. If your old photos carry a watermark, re-shoot or regenerate them clean rather than trying to blur it out.
Backgrounds: plain wins, white is safest
Unlike Amazon, eBay doesn't force a white background on most categories — but catalog-style categories (sneakers is the known one) do require it, and a clean background reliably outperforms a busy one in search. A kitchen table with clutter behind your item reads as "risky seller" at thumbnail size. Our free white background tool cuts the product out and drops it on pure white in the browser, and the marketplace image checker validates size, ratio and background against eBay's rules before you upload.
Rule of thumb: one clean 1,600 × 1,600 px hero on white, then 7+ additional photos — angles, close-ups of any flaws, labels, and one in-context shot. Honest flaw close-ups don't scare buyers away; they pre-answer the questions that otherwise become returns.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum image size for eBay?
500 pixels on the longest side — anything smaller is rejected at upload. Treat 1,600 px as the real minimum if you want zoom and sharp thumbnails.
What image size enables zoom on eBay?
Zoom starts working at around 800 px on the longest side but only looks good from about 1,600 px. Bigger originals (up to eBay's 12 MB limit) never hurt.
Does eBay allow watermarks or text on photos?
No — watermarks, borders and added text have been banned since 2018. The listing photo should show only the item.
Does eBay require a white background?
Only in certain catalog categories, but a white or plain neutral background is recommended everywhere and consistently performs better in search results.
